To ensure that he doesn’t lose supporters, Obama began campaigning on college campuses during the Republican National Convention. So how does one win over students? They are caught in between their parents’ political views and those that they are forming for themselves, and as a result are a relatively unstable population to hold on to. If the candidates want to win over college students, they have to meet them where they are: online. Students rarely take the time to read the paper or even watch the evening news. For better or for worse, the population of collegiate scholars is generally apathetic when it comes to staying informed on current events. If youve opted for lessons in your home, how should you prepare your space beforehand? Here are some tips from Hayward, CA teacher Molly R... Your teacher may have the ideal set up in his or her studio when you attend your voice lessons, but if the lessons are in your home instead, what sort of things do you need to do to help with your progress? Here are four steps to help you prepare for voice lessons in your home: 1. Dedicate a space This is important: you want a section of the house where you have enough room to move comfortably, and enough room for a music stand, keyboard, and other materials. You definitely want to be singing in a place where you won’t be disturbed… or disturb anyone else, for that matter! 2. Check with others Singing can get LOUD. If you live in an apartment, you may want to let your neighbors know that you’re a singer, and ask if they may have any set times they’d prefer there be no loud noise (a child’s nap time, for example). If you’re in a house with other family members to consider, simply ask that you work out a family schedule so that you can use your space at a set time. 3. What is a Fraction Fraction is a number which is written in the form a/b where a and b are any integers except b 0. Fractions are written in this form and hence they have numerator and a denominator. The place where the number is written in the top of the fraction is known as the numerator and the place where a number is written in the bottom is known as the denominator of the fraction. Fractions can be simplified further if possible and be converted to various other number forms. Example 1: Add the given two fractions: 3/8 + 1/8. Given expression: 3/8 + 1/8 Here both 3/8 and 1/8 are fractions and they are being added together. In order to add or subtract two fractions, we have to make sure that the fractions have the same denominator. Both 3/8 and 1/8 have the same denominator 8, hence they can be added directly! This gives: 3/8+1/8 = (3+ 1)/8= 4/8. 4/8 can be simplified by dividing the top and the bottom by the factor 4==4/8= 1/2 Therefore, 3/8+ 1/8 = 4/8 = 1/2 Example 2:Subtract the given two fractions: 17/4 5/4. Given expression: 17/4 5/4 Here both 17/4 and 5/4 are fractions and they are being subtracted together. In order to add or subtract two fractions, we have to make sure that the fractions have the same denominator. Both 17/4 and 5/4 have the same denominator 4, hence they can be subtracted directly! The Eight-Bar Progression Begins With Two (Not Four) Measures Of The First Chord The structure of the twelve-bar pattern is as follows: E-E-E-E-A-A-E-E-B7-A-E-E/B7. Although Johnson switches to A for the second measure and then back to E for the third (which is an acceptable variation), he adheres to all of the changes Ive identified. The eight-bar progression follows a similar albeit condensed sequence: E-E-A-E-E-B7-E-E/B7. The YouTube version Ive included above involves another acceptable variation: an A minor chord instead of an E major one during the fourth measure of the verses. One of the easiest differences to remember between this sequence and its twelve-bar counterpart is the opening of each. The eight-bar opening is merely half the length of the twelve-bar one as E (in this case) and is played for only two measures. The Eight-Bar Progressions First Change Lasts One (Not Two) Measures Again, the eight-bar pattern represents 50% of another of the twelve-bar segments as A (in this case), and is played for only one measure. The Eight-Bar Progressions Closing Involves Two (Not Three) Chords Think of the twelve-bar closing as rolling down a hill. You start at the top (at B7 in this case), roll down to the chord behind it (A), and arrive back down at the foot (E), staying on each chord for no longer than one measure. The eight-bars closing (by contrast) involves a simple return to the foot. You might even consider using Star Trek terminology here and think of your hand being beamed back down to E instead of rolling back to it. The ending measure of each of these blues chord progressions is identical, though probably the most difficult measure (in both cases) to learn to play. It involves more than one chord and a change only one-fourth of the way in (EB7B7B7). I dub this final chord (B7) the interrupting chord. Unlike the other chords, its awkward and abrupt. However, its as essential to each progression as the other chords are. A feisty accent is a more acceptable ending for a blues stanza than merely having it drift off on the chord it began on.
